Quote
By Leo Tolstoy
Love hinders death. Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone.

About this quote
From War and Peace (Book Twelve, Chapter 16), in the English translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude. These are the thoughts of the character Prince Andrew Bolkonski as he lies dying, as the narrator reports them, not Tolstoy speaking in his own voice. The narrator goes on to say that these were only thoughts and that something was lacking in them. Tolstoy wrote in Russian, so this is the translators' wording.
