About this quote
From Crime and Punishment (Part Three, Chapter V), in Constance Garnett's English translation. Spoken by the character Raskolnikov, who is himself the killer in the novel, as he talks with the investigator Porfiry Petrovitch about a man who commits a crime and then suffers for it. It is a character's line, not Dostoevsky speaking in his own voice. Dostoevsky wrote in Russian, so this is the translator's wording.
