About this quote
From Grant's Personal Memoirs, Volume I (New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885). Grant is looking back on the Mexican War, which he thought unjust, and says the Southern rebellion was largely its outgrowth. The next sentence is "We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times."
