Truth's reply to her mistress after Dumont's family sold her five-year-old son Peter to a man who took him out of New York State, which was illegal. Olive Gilbert wrote it down from Truth's account in the Narrative of Sojourner Truth (Boston, 1850), where it appears in single quotation marks. Truth did win her son back in court.
