About this quote
Truth never learned to read or write, so her words reach us through others. This is her reply to her former owner, John Dumont, who came to find her after she left his farm in New York. Olive Gilbert wrote it down from Truth's account in the Narrative of Sojourner Truth (Boston, 1850), where it appears in single quotation marks.
