About this quote
From John Quincy Adams's address of July 4, 1821 in Washington, delivered while he was Secretary of State, on the occasion of reading the Declaration of Independence. "She" is America. In the next sentences he says she is the well-wisher of freedom everywhere but the champion and vindicator only of her own. The two 1821 printings differ on the punctuation of this line.
